How to become a Gas Engineer in 3 Easy Steps
Become a Gas Engineer in 3 steps:
Step 1 - The Interview
We’ll have an initial phone conversation to check the course is right for you. (Don’t worry! Even if you have little experience it’s worth a chat as we may be able to help). You will then be booked for an interview with our trainer to discuss your goals.
We have a created a recommended route. This covers domestic gas, boilers and water heaters. If this doesn’t suit your needs, we have pathways we can tailor to your intended field.
Step 2 – MLP (CCN1) and CENWAT
(Core Domestic Gas plus boilers and water heaters)
(Please note: the steps outlined follow the recommended path. Your steps may differ slightly if you choose a different path)
Choosing our recommended path, you will attend and complete your Managed Learning Program. This will involve your Core Domestic Gas alongside Boilers and Water Heaters. This involves a mixture of work experience and classroom-based learning. For this step you will be with us for around 9-11 weeks. A week each month in the classroom at Kiwa, the rest is dedicated to building your portfolio.
Step 3 - ACS (CCN1) and CENWAT
Once you’ve passed your MLP, the next step is for you to complete your ACS. The ACS provides you with your certificate of competence. This is the industry recognised route to become a member of the Gas Safe Register.
ACS Training will take place over about a week (between 4-7 days), made up of:
- Training: 3 days
- Written Assessment: 1 day
- Practical Assessment: Day 6 or 7
Well Done, you’re now an experienced Gas Operative!

How much does a Gas Engineer earn?
So, you have read all about how to become a Gas Engineer (If not you can read about that here). Next up we will discuss the earning potential of your chosen career! Gas Engineers are a specialised job and generally are quite sought after which means the pay tends to be competitive.
Your salary depends on the path you take. At the time this article was published the average salary for a Gas Engineer in the UK is around £32k. If you were to become self-employed there is the potential to earn a lot more. Here are the most up to date stats
When you are starting out you can expect to earn around £30k with highly experienced engineers earning over £42k.
“Since this is a very skilled position that is in demand, there is a lot of potential for your salary to go much higher than this. It all depends on how skilled you are and how good you are with customers. If you are excellent at finding problems with gas fittings and installing anything from a new hob to a new boiler, you should never be short of work.
