Kiwa wins international award for innovative methane reporting
Kiwa, together with Alliander, DEP and Stedin, has won the IGU Global Gas Award during the 29th World Gas Conference (WGC2025) in Beijing. The award was granted for the paper ‘OGMP 2.0 Methane Emissions Reporting: The Dutch Approach’.
The award recognizes the collaborative work of Bert Wikkerink (Kiwa), Rosemarie van Eekelen (Alliander), Ruud Mooij (DEP), and Ricardo Verhoeve (Stedin). With this publication, they have brought international attention to the Dutch approach to methane emissions reporting. The prize consists of a certificate, a medal, and a monetary award. The official award ceremony took place on Friday, May 23, during the closing ceremony of the conference at the China National Convention Center.
Kiwa carried out the reporting on behalf of the six Dutch gas network operators: Coteq, Enexis, Liander, Rendo, Stedin, and Westland Infra. Since 2020, these operators have been working together under the UN’s OGMP 2.0 program, which imposes strict requirements for measuring and reporting methane emissions in the gas infrastructure. The Dutch approach is unique: instead of relying on general emission factors, the operators use detailed, asset-specific measurements for each pipeline type and emission source. The result is an accurate, transparent method that can serve as an example for other countries.
